Dunbar DofE Bronze Groups - Route Cards & Aim

The following information is to help you write route cards for your upcoming expedition. Individuals are required to complete a route card as part of their training. The easiest way to do this is for individuals to complete 1 day of the route. Half of each group to complete day 1 and the others to complete day 2.

I will then make up a final route card based on the information the whole group submits.

Below are PDF files which include high resolution maps and an editable Word Document Route Card. I have also attached a completed route card from a Knox group which shows you the type of information we are looking for (this is a different route to yours!).

The maps are best viewed online, either on a PC or Laptop. You can also print if you prefer.

Bob and Blair should have given instruction during your training days regarding how to fill in the route cards. So hopefully this isn’t something you are not aware of.

Filling in the route card:

  • Base your walking speed on 4km per hour. Unlike overnight expeditions, you won’t have heavy packs to slow you down

  • Routes are marked in green. Day 1 is East Linton to Haddington and day 2 is Haddington to East Linton

  • Each day starting at 10am

  • Each day must add up to at least 6 hours. This is the minimum number of hours per day, set by DofE but does include breaks. If you were to have roughly 10 minutes rest and aim time for every hour and 30 minutes for lunch, then this should be fine.

  • Please complete all 8 legs of the route cards

  • Use obvious features to indicate legs. i.e. bridges, road junctions, woodland etc.

  • Fill in all sections apart from the escape notes

Once complete, please email the Word Doc to me antony@venturingout.org.uk Please don’t attach to Google Drive or similar as I cannot access these.

Aim: As part of a qualifying expedition you are required, as a group to complete a project, known as an Aim. This can be whatever you like as long as its relevant and doesn’t include social media. There are examples on DofE’s website. Some groups simply do a video diary of their journey.

If you are unsure about any of this or have any questions, please email me and I’ll get back to you.
